The Mysterious Magenta Adegan Crystal

Just a short snippet from the official forums – there’s been some discussion on how to find the Magenta Adegan Crystal, and whether it can be gained through reverse engineering. Georg Zoeller, SWTOR’s Principal Lead Combat Designer, Georg Zoeller, has rightly kept the absolute location of the crystal secret but has clarified how it can be picked up:

The Magenta Crystal does in fact exist, but it is not acquired through Reverse Engineering. At the present time, it could be classified as one of the rarest items in the game.

While I am not going to give any more information on how, where or from whom it may be acquired, I want to debunk the idea that you have to reverse engineer endgame gear to get it so people don’t do stuff they regret.

So in case you missed it: don’t be reverse engineering end-game gear for the Magenta Adegan Crystal or you’re going to be mightily disappointed. YOU may go a shade of magenta if you do try however.

Suggestion Box: Oceanic Launch Locations

Another weekend of levelling coming up for most of us, but if you get a chance to drag yourself away from your companion for a few minutes, we’d love your thought on this week’s topic: Oceanic launch.

As you probably know, there’s going to be some sort of local shindig in March or April we believe. So: where should the launches be held in Australia and New Zealand? Name a city / venue / time, whatever catches your fancy.

Let’s be creative and you never know, maybe the folks at Bioware will agree to the nudey run launch through the CBD of Australia and New Zealand’s capitals. Over to you!

You, Robot – Part 1

Love them or hate them, companions are a pivotal part of the SWTOR experience. Our resident companion guru, Simon, will be covering in-depth over three parts, everything you need to know about companions. If you’re looking for the full Companions Chart, here’s where you go, otherwise read on below.

Part 1 – NPCs that need NPCs are the luckiest NPCs in the world.

As I stared at my Twilek slave, pondering the merits of freeing her or bestowing another 20,000 volt love-tap, I noticed an irritating buzz in the back of my head. I should mention that I usually ignore most of the activity in there, but this time was different.

This time I realised what it was, before anyone had to accuse me of being insensitive, ripping the ethernet cable from the PC, storming from the room then skyping her mother for two hours whilst eating all the ice cream. Hypothetically speaking, of course.

Where was I? Oh, right -feelings. In this case guilt. And while your frontal lobe may know it doesn’t matter in any real sense how you treat a computer generated, scripted character, deep down in the squishy gray recesses of your brain are neurons that don’t differentiate bad behaviour towards one of your companions or a flesh-and-blood person. For me, that’s where the magic begins.

Bioware’s companion characters have always been deep and contrary with their own agendas. In SWTOR, as you should know by now, this tradition has developed further. With their deft facial animations and sometimes inscrutable likes and dislikes they slowly take on a more real nature then you’d expect. Granted we humans are great at finding patterns where none exist and filling in details that are only suggested. This is why people in Tallahassee occassionally see the image of Elvis on their toast.

But even knowing that, it’s sometimes hard to believe they don’t have a more profound opinion of you than ‘+15 affection’. All of the companions have their own quirks and it’s not always straightforward identifying their likes and dislikes. Having said that, if you’re looking for some insight into your companions or simply want to suck all the fun out of life, you’ll find some useful information in the linked tables accompanying this and the next two articles in this short series.

By now all of you have met several companions and how you feel about them will depend on how you choose to play the game. In some ways it’s easier to ignore them when they start prompting you for a cosy chat everytime you go into a cantina and just use them for the extra firepower, healing, crafting or running off to sell your accumulated junk. But if you do that you’ll miss all the other benefits of getting to know your new imagninary friends. Not only will they add depth through exposition and open up additional side missions, you also have the much discussed opportunity for romance. At this point there’s been little revealed about the depth of this feature, either in the current patch or future ones (barring the same-gender aspect).

There’s always the chance that giving gifts to a companion may be as exciting as giving your toaster the gift of bread – but Bioware isn’t just going to give us toast, as these romantic tangents will offer additional side quests. Even if they don’t ‘love’ you, some companions will offer opportunities for gear if they like you enough. Everyone hates you? No problem, just buy them gifts until they’re borderline co-dependent. Not sure whether they’d prefer ammo or flowers? Just check the table.

All that said – if Bioware adheres to canon, the exploration of love will necessitate flirting with the dangers of passion, although you could remain pure if you only participated in meaningless sex. But that wouldn’t appeal to most players… would it?. I should also mention that not all companions are romanceable, so if you are a smuggler hoping for a little wookie-lurve, you are out of luck. Bioware’s criteria of only having human-like playable races also extends to the races that you can flirt with. If you are curious about your chances for love, you could look up your horoscope or for more reliable information, try the table.

Of course, the best feature of your companion is that, unlike a real person, you can dismiss them when they start to get on your nerves, instead of having to sit smiling through Notting Hill for the hundreth time.

Hypothetically speaking, of course.

In the second part of this brief guide we’ll be looking at combat, AI and the all-important ability to pimp your companion’s appearance.

Confirmed: SWTOR copies in local stores (Australia) – UPDATED

Following on from our earlier story, I took a walk at lunch-time to a suburban EB Games store and asked for a timeframe on copies being available. The friendly staff member confirmed they had copies for pre-orders, but that she would go and check if there were extra copies available. They were back within 30 seconds to confirm there were two copies available for sale immediately, one of which you can see in this blurry picture:

The price was $78. So the only uncertainty is why there’s stock without a launch date – seems that EA’s local distribution are definitely not on holidays but maybe haven’t realised there’s a launch date announcement to come. We’ve contacted EA’s Australian PR for comment.

UPDATE: We’ve heard back from EA Australia, who have stated they have no comment until they’ve investigated the situation.

UPDATE2: As posted in the comments below, some speculation on where these copies have come from:

When I picked it up, the staff member made a point of stating that it was not an Australian copy, but were special orders from their American business partners (I assume Gamespot). They seemed well aware of the March release date, and explained their own surprise when yesterday they recieved word that swtor shipments would arrive.

SWTOR on sale in Australia – EB Games jumps the gun?

Interesting post over at Kotaku, where they’re reporting that some EB Games stores have copies of SWTOR.

If they do have them, it’s likely to be in limited numbers, but it’s an interesting scenario from a distribution viewpoint given the final launch date hasn’t been confirmed. We’ll be toddling off to our local EB Games store in an hour or two to try and photograph a copy grazing in the wild. Watch this space!

James Ohlen: All Your Bugs Are Belong To Us

A quick update from SWTOR’s Game Director James Ohlen on the regularity of bug fixes for the game:

Almost every week we will be releasing a new patch. These weekly patches are almost entirely focused on bug fixes, minor balance changes and fixing any exploits in the game. These issues are the highest priority items at the studio. They are reviewed by senior leadership on a daily basis. Bug fixes usually take longer than a week to get into the game because we need to fix the issue and then test the fix. Some bugs take longer than that because of the complexity of the issue.

There are issues that we will fix immediately. These are rare and not every issue can be fixed in this manner. We usually reserve these “emergency fixes” for bugs that are stopping players from playing the game or to exploits that could unbalance the entire game if not corrected.

Any game as big and as complex as The Old Republic will have bugs. We’re working as hard as we can to find, fix, test and patch the game to eliminate as many of them as possible.

Seems a very sane and expected approach to me – I like regular updates rather than skanking huge patches that mostly fix bugs. How about you? Are you experiencing bugs that are driving you insane?

Oceanic Guild Spotlight: Kangaroos With Frickin Lightsabers (KWFL)

If you’d like your guild spotlighted, just use our contact form to let us know. Or if you like, respond to the questions shown below and send them in – we love to profile guilds and the work they’re doing.

The only requirement is that you’re an active oceanic guild. Please be patient if you don’t hear back from us immediately – we will only be spotlighting a guild every week or so.

Name of guild
Kangaroos With Frickin Lightsabers (KWFL)

Guild website

History of your guild’s name

Originally we were known as Kangaroos with Frickin Lazerbeams as a corp in Eve Online. If anyone has played it they will probably have heard of us at one point or another. We participated in two annual alliance tournaments there and had lots of fun. A lot of us are looking for something fresh and it seemed only fitting to change it from Lazerbeams to Lightsabers.

What sort of guild do you intend on being?

We are pretty casual but are keen on end game content, PvP and mainly just like having a laugh. We all enjoy our beer so there’s plenty of good times on Teamspeak. We have been known to occasionally crack out the old rhythm augmentation droid and spontaneously break into all out raving.

Why did you choose to be a part of the Empire?

Being evil is loads of fun. Down to the little things like the interrogation droid pet, the dark side is just plain better!

You have one minute to convince someone they should be in your guild – what would you say to them?

If you’re keen to chill on TS and play with a casual bunch of guys, then this would be for you. We would love to have some more diversity and more classes in the guild and we’re always happy to help newer players with class missions and leveling that can otherwise get a little frustrating.

What are your predictions for the first 6 months of the guild’s existence post-launch?

We don’t really have any specific aims in the Guild as of yet other than hit lvl 50 and smash out some hard dungeons and whatnot. Definately some PvP is gonna happen as well, we are all keen as mustard for that. And if we get enough people we would love to start an in-guild PvP tournament with some good old 2v2’s and 4v4’s.

Machinima: Sith Marauder PvP

One of the things I’ve most been looking forward to with the launch of SWTOR, is the coming torrent of machinima from the game. That includes some good overviews of gameplay, and one such example comes from Oceanic player Klinda, who’s put some of his better moments as a PvP’ing Sith Marauder to some music and produced this:

I’m pretty sure I’ve been killed a number of times by damn Sith Maurauders but it’s fun viewing anyway. If you’ve got your own machinima you’d like to share, post it in comments!

SWTOR coming for Mac: coming ‘soon’

Joystiq have a quick snippet of a quote from Bioware’s co-founders on the issue of playing SWTOR on a Mac.

Ray Muzyka:

We’ve done a lot of Mac ports before of our games. We haven’t announced any details yet for The Old Republic, but we know that’s an important and large audience.

Greg Zeschuk:

That’s definitely one of the things we’re looking at next. We want to get this launch under our belt and everything stabilized and happy, and then we’ll look at other platforms, and that’s obviously one of the first ones

There’s not a lot of concrete stuff in there but it’s a hell of a step forward from Bioware’s position to date and will bring some joy to those not willing to run the game on a Boot Camp partition (which for the record works beautifully for me).

Over to you: looking forward to a Mac port of the game?

Thanks to Gail for the heads-up!

The Tea-Sipping Jedi

Just a random plug for a t-shirt I stumbled across today. I like a more subtle Star Wars vibe and this t-shirt fits that bill nicely (click on the pic for the full-size version):

I still probably love my NZ Sith T-Shirt more though.

Feel free to link to other cool Star Wars T-Shirts you’ve seen. Any SWTOR ones on the market yet?

Unconfirmed Oceanic First: 4/5 cleared Eternity Vault Hard Mode

Those dynamos over at Remnants have continued their progress from a full normal mode Eternity Vault clear a few days back:

Remnants ventured into Eternity Vault Hard Mode last night for the first time, which is a significant step up from the Normal Mode. After coming off the high that they experienced from being Oceanic first by dropping 5/5 bosses in Normal Mode, they have now pushed through to carry out Oceanic first kills in the Hard Mode of Eternity Vault, downing 4/5 bosses!

All that is left is “Soa – The Infernal One”, who doesn’t stand a chance with this team beating down the door!

The team: Narboon, Korbainethor, Krelliath, Klinda, Chair, Elgordomedico, Cheewy, Skandus

Here’s one of the pics (click on it for the full goodness):

Sounds like the full clear is imminent. As always, we’re keen to hear from other guilds who are doing well in either early or end content to let us know and we’ll plug your progress!
