From The Holonet: The Republic’s Dangerous Enemies And What To Do With Them

From the Holonet is a series of articles, opinion pieces and features taken from the Old Republic and printed here on TOROZ.

The Republic is threatened by more than just the Empire. A wretched plague fouls the democratic dream. Organised gangs run wild through the capital of Coruscant and across the galaxy, from corrupt law enforcement to drug gangs. To top it off, lately rumours of a prison planet suffering mass break outs are running wild through the holonet. It is clear to most of us that the republic is facing an organised crime epidemic. While the Emperor spends his every waking hour planning the downfall of our galactic republic, treacherous profiteers seek to waste our precious resources, distract our brave soldiers and drive us even closer to collapse.

Take a single gangster. This individual will reside, squatting, in some abandoned locale which could be providing housing for refugees, or a disused factory that could be commandeered for the armies. From there, they will patrol their territory, using guns on Republic civilians, other gangsters, law enforcement, etc in attempt to acquire more credits, expand that territory, or just generally make chaos. To suppress this individual, the Republic government must commit security forces, who then must stop working on other projects, and possibly take casualties in the process. When arrested, they are contained and put through the judicial system. Only to be either let free to continue wasting exponential amounts of time, or returned to containment where they must be fed, housed, and have more resources spent on keeping them around. Given the current threat of the Empire, this is an absolute and undeniable case of treason. There is no scenario in which these criminals are not actively and aggressively shutting down the Republics capacity to make war, and to provide safe housing for its refugees.

To elaborate, if the Empire were to directly threaten Coruscant again, the battle on the planet would be fierce. These criminals, who have spent their lives antagonising the Republic would find little refuge amongst the civilians or the army. So, would this individual not find the notion of joining the Empire appealing? Promises of exoneration for servitude would be a simple decision. Criminals who give their lives to stealing from the Republic are not patriots. It would not be long many if not most of the gangsters across Coruscant were aiding the Empire, and a few prison breaks later there would be plenty more to the fold.

If instead, all organised criminals were issued immediate death warrants, the resource cost would only go so far as the security deployment used to kill them. In this scenario, the Republic could simply issue routine patrols to sweep areas, and killing gangs. Many conveniently ‘flag’ themselves regardless. In this case, the resource cost is significantly lesser, and more importantly, organised criminals are eliminated as a threat to Republic stability. Furthermore, the treasonous criminals could be immediately dealt justice. If nothing else, this law should last the duration of the existence of the Empire.

There should be no mistaking; I do not advocate for the elimination of all criminals, simply an on the spot death penalty for those who organise in groups and actively disrupt the government. I understand how this policy may be considered similar to something in the Empire. I wish to refute this. In this case, the policy only defines treason as worthy of on the spot execution, further, it only specifies active organised criminals as deserving of the death penalty. This is not targeted at political opponents, people who fail to achieve certain tasks or other minor issues, it is not a slipperly slope or, ‘the thin edge of the wedge’ as some might say in an attempt to scare you. It is a simple measure, somewhere between government in peacetime and in wartime. Write to your senator; petition your neighbours, friends and family. Call for a proposition on the organised crime death penalty. The Republic needs safer streets, quieter slums and a capital city filled with patriots, not criminals. It is the only effective solution to the Republics dangerous enemies within.

Cavalair is a Twi’lek raised by a human family on Coruscant, who had adopted him after he was liberated from a busted slave trading ring. A survivor of the sacking of Coruscant and a common figure on the galactic political scene, he is often found writing articles and advocating his views on the Empire, the Republic and everything related. His views are held in high regard right across the Republic.

From The Holonet: Why the Empire Can and Must Win

From the Holonet is a series of articles, opinion pieces and features taken from the Old Republic and printed here on TOROZ.

In Imperial society, power is truth.  Sith principles guide the Empire to new heights with every passing hour.  It is a simple and proud example of our principles, to watch those with ability break their chains and achieve what others could never do.  Recognition of power and authority is one of the cornerstones of the Empire, and why the Empire is destined to win.

As we all know, the Republic unrelentingly gorges upon its citizens’ tax credits and wastes them on woeful projects such as the doomed Taris reconstruction.  Such endless expenditures drive good Human citizens into poverty, so that Ithorians and other aliens might live in luxury on a getaway planet, fulfilling their whimsical dream of growing plants.  Such an institutionalised tragedy is not matched in the Empire.  Money is spent on the military, which brings more wealth to its people as well as protects what wealth it does have.  Those individuals most worthy and most able invariably obtain the wealth that they deserve.

The sprawling seat of power that is Kaas city; home to many of the Empire’s finest

The Imperial political system is also superior.  In it, those most capable and most powerful obtain more power.  This is a system where promotion is granted on merit, not on mercy.  In the Republic, a so-called democracy, the brutal rule of the unintelligent masses shackles and weighs down the brilliant few.  While capable Republic people are stuck fulfilling the demands of the incapable masses, Imperial brilliance is rewarded and promoted within the system.  The incapable minorities are driven to achieve well above their station, as directed by the most capable.  In almost all cases, that is the Sith.  Within the Empire, the actions of a Sith Lord who steps into command of a military affair and subsequently succeeds is not only permitted, but encouraged.  In the Republic, it would be looked down upon, perhaps even punished.

In the Republic, the Senate is the primary political force.  Senate committees, subcommittees, debates and votes take an incredibly long time to get anything done.  They are also so complex as to be hidden from sight.  Corruption within the Senate, like the Republic, is common and ugly.  The Empire has the Dark Council.  The most powerful and most worthy Sith are empowered to make decisions.  Without the delays and the intrigue of the broken Republic political system, the Empire is able to make decisions quickly and implement them effectively.  The Senate is caught floundering and failing to keep up with the Dark Council.  One merely has to look at their mishandling of the Treaty of Coruscant.  Distinctly unpopular with the Republic’s most able individuals, Master Satele Shan and General Garza among them, Senate grumblings and Alien votes prevent its overturning. Instead, the Republic continues to bow in deference to a humiliating treaty, surrendering huge amounts of territory and enforcing complex conditions upon themselves.  The Empire would never have subjected itself to such a thing, for they are powerful, independent and free.

It is for these reasons that victory must go to the Empire.  Every planet claimed for the Republic, is another planet to be weighed down by democracy, by alien rule and by wasteful spending.  Every planet liberated under the Emperor will find its potential unleashed, and its most capable citizens will soon flourish under the glorious banner of the Imperial forces.  The galaxy cannot afford Republic rule.  Its people cannot afford it.  There is too much talent, too much power and too much potential wasted within its borders.  Only the Empire can bring the worthy to power, and only the Empire can liberate the people of the galaxy.

Swtor confusing. Bonus missions, heroics, flashpoints. I’m stressed. Suggestions ; )
I originally posted this on MMORPG.Com, about Bonus Missions and though it might be useful here.
I want to say ahead of time I think this game is amazing, and will keep getting better and better. This is probably
my biggest problem with the game, and with RPG’S in general and that’s why I posted it.

Cutting confusion/ organization is one major things that could help the game survive longer……..Please forgive me if I’m a little bit cynical/angry/bitter/mean. I’m really not this is just rooted out of the stress from playing the game deeply

Please, Please Read

(THE NEW MISSIONS ARE NOT THE PROBLEM. PEOPLE (us) ARE NOT THE PROBLEM….)

THE
PROBLEM
IS
ORGANIZATION
AND
SIMPLIFICATION
OF
GAME
CONTENT.

Lets say you had to kill The Blob. Well that sould take forever, his Blobness is all over everything. He covers half your city. You don’t even know where to start.

That is how it feels to play SWTOR.

But what if The Blob and his trail of mess you had to kill was divided into sections? Maybe he had five kids, and wasn’t as big. Also you have an I-Phone app that locates each Blob Child ; ). Problem is with SWTOR….the “I-Phone” App is confusing and a little messy….

Here is how you eliminate The SWTOR Blob… (again no offense to creators, game is great)

Will Bioware bring playable races that doesn’t look like colored humans?
I’ll be honest, I played Star Wars Galaxies for like 1 month (the game was like 10 bucks with 1 month free) and there was something I really enjoyed: Playing as an Ithorian bounty hunter.

So I started playing this game like 1 week ago and I was kinda disappointed to see that the only playables races basically look like your average human with flashy colors and “alien” appendices.
There is also something else that kinda felt awkward to me, there aren’t enough alien npcs wandering around, the whole game feels kinda “humans in space only” .

I haven’t followed much what Bioware has in stock for the future, but I would really like to think they will bring a little more fantasy content instead of the 90% human population/10% “alien” races in this game lorewise, along with having the possibility of having an ithorian bounty hunter

Anyway, that was just my 2 cents, overall I’m having fun with this game, not the ultimate mmorpg, but fun nontheless.

Sup everyone, so as we all know sorcs and BHs are getting nerfed hard, and Marauder is looking like the new OP class next patch. Is there anything I should know about the class before I start leveling? How does it play in pvp and pve? And are you overall happy with the class?

Voiced Missions not Worth It in the End
I loved the voice acting. It really pulled me into the story…..the first time. Now I space bar everything except class story line when leveling an alt. I had thought that I would want to play the different ‘decision’ trees through the conversation, but have found them to be inconsequential making the replay not worthwhile.

So this I believe will be the first and last MMORPG that offers such an extensive voiced narrative. The cost benefit does not exist to support it. The lead time required for development is also a problem.

What do you think?

In my decades of gaming, I’ve met a lot of gamers, and really good ones are much rarer than pretty good ones. And given that a lot of women hide their gender online so they aren’t pre-judged by people who assume that they’ll never measure up, you can’t actually say you’ve never met an exceptional woman gamer unless you ask every single person you ever game with what their gender is.

Which would be either creepy, or improbable. I’m going with the latter.

But even if you haven’t met a really good woman gamer, that says more about your social life than about our playing abilities. It’s not like we don’t exist.

Whatever “good” means – is it DPS? Kills per raid? Bank balance? How much fun you have when you’re with them? How long they’ve been gaming? Whether they do what you want them to or not? That time they managed to keep you alive even though you kept standing in the @$%^ fire like a Noob? Is someone who’s really good at playing the way they want to play a lesser gamer because you think they should be playing your way? Your statement is essentially unquantifiable.

Been a bit disgusted with the amount of crying lately on these boards. Some people are never happy. I just don’t see what people are so worked up about, this is one of the best MMO’s I’ve ever played – it’s not perfect no but then what is?

Anyway I was wondering what the original Star Wars movies would have been like if the characters had forums to whinge on…

Yeah I wouldn’t be surprised if this violated some form of TOS but it’s all in fun, honest:

Theme Park vs Sandbox, What Do The Players Think?
I have seen many posts regarding this subject and the pros and cons of each but I would like to get a feel for what the players really want.

MMO developers seem to think that sandbox is now a niche area and theme park is the way to go. Many sandbox MMOs are still going strong even though they have changed their subscription model in an effort to retain their existing players and entice new players to give their game a go.

Lord of the Rings Online, Age of Conan, World of Warcraft, and, in my opinion, the daddy of them all, Eve Online is still going strong. I have returned to Eve twice over the years and recall the newbie chat channel and the opening channel after that is full of constant chatter which is what gives it its name Massive that it deserves.

And of course, take a look at the fourth coming Guild Wars 2. The devs have decided to change course from the famously heavily instanced original Guild Wars, although extremely popular, to a more open sandbox world, going completely against the grain of what the gaming masses are supposed to enjoy the most.

It is a matter of opinion but for me, when GW2 is released, that is where I will be going because I believe that heavy instancing takes the massively out of the game thus demeaning its goal. Having said that, I still dont know what the majority of the MMO fraternity think and want.

So maybe we can find out from this post whether or not the devs took the right direction and so will keep their players for many years to come or will they leave en masse to return to the sandbox idea that the MMO genre originally embraced?

Like would it be possible to use both techniques to use the force: Focusing and clearing your mind of emotions AND using your emotions to harness the force just at different times: AKA dark side usage and light side usage.

If I recall correctly, didn’t the early jedaii who evolved into the jedi practice both the light and dark side without becoming corrupted by the dark side?

1.2 pvp a love hate.. depending on where you stand..
Final thoughts: If you are on a winning server or play DPS your probably loving the patch. However, unless your either blind or selfish this patch is the worst thing that has happen to pvp for this game since launch. I think being on both sides of the fence I can confidently say BW needs to fix something FAST! If your going to respond to this or any other comments about loving or hating the patch.. please list your Class – Type – and Win %. Im curious to see how many people on losing servers think this patch is good? It isnt a matter of L2P or change your rotation. The patch clearly favors one side over the other.. PVP is supposed to be balanced. Its far from it now. I dont see what was wrong with 1.1.5??

Mapex – Classes

Damage May Be Down, but Your Class is NOT Nerfed
Combat ratings have changed drastically with this patch, most noticeably Expertise. If you feel your class is nerfed (i.e. EVERYONE feels their class is nerfed), take a step back and analyze the situations in which your damage seems to be significantly lower than normal.

In the long run the changes to the classes and the gear in this patch are good for the game. There may be some hiccups and some crazy issues that pop up by the end of the next week, but overall healing and damage have been reined in as they were scaling to levels that would be very difficult to manage in the coming months.

So my advice to everyone is just to sit tight and adapt to the new game. Get geared out and play the game “by the rules” (i.e. no more DMing in warzones, go get those objective-based medals; play your spec like it was intended) and I assure you that you will reap the rewards of better gameplay without feeling the sting of “nerfs.”

MMO Vets, What do you think?

I have played quite a few MMO’s over the years and I just wanted to throw my opinion out there and discuss any agreements or disagreements about swtor.

I have noticed a trend in MMO’s lately that didn’t start with this game, but is certainly prevalent. Solo-ability to cap and as quick as possible. At the rate i’m going I will probably hit my cap before I get charged for my first month. This is a double edged sword for me. Sure I like that I don’t HAVE to group to level up, and with this type of system the grind is almost eleminated. But for a subscription based service, I don’t know if I will spend the wow like amount of time at the endgame, grinding out the same raids, pvp, or dailies for new gear and such. One of my favorite mmo’s is EQ2 (and please this is an opinion, so lets not make this a discussion on how much SOE sucks), and, to me, the journey is as fun as the endgame. Subscribing to that game wasn’t a bother to me, because I felt like I was getting the most time out of my money. It would take months for even some hardcore players to get to cap (I am talking the early days, takes a lot less time now).

[HOWTO – RAMDRIVE] Increasing SWTOR System Performance
Lets talk about increasing SWTOR Performance by working around Engine Bottlenecks!

Right now this focuses on placing DiskCacheArena and 2 buffer files DiskCacheStatic / DiskCacheStream on a RamDrive.
The increase in performance I’ve seen during my test for the past few days was quite nice, resolved 2 issues with the engine.

The First being a performance drop once DiskCacheArena starts becoming full where data needs to be flushed during gameplay, causing severe hitching* even on an SSD.
Second is for Static and Stream, simple buffers that work wonders in a RamDrive but will slow performance anytime they are on disk; the performance drop remains even if Arena is in a RamDrive.

Plucked this off Metacritic, I’m a dude and I didn’t really see it until she mentioned it but the female characters are pretty much straight out of what you would see from old movies or old TV shows.

Totally agree with Jenny though. Bioware is going to have a hard sell with long-term female customers.

Juggernaut 1.2 Changes

With Full battlemaster gear, I only have 15600 HP. Furthermore, I have Saber Ward as my only real damage mitigation ability endemic to my class. A DPS geared and specd Juggernaut does not have high survivability, to be honest a DPS Mercenary has more HP. The AC merely offsets the HP differential. So for this conversation we should take the premise that a DPS Rage Juggernaut is indeed a DPS class and more importantly the most viable DPS Juggernaut spec in the game, and as it stands the Vengeance Tree past tier 2 is not viable for anyone truly seeking to be competitive in endgame PVP as a DPS class. The patch notes themselves confirm that.

I would wholeheartedly give up any buffs to my shockwave and crit timer to keep the reduced timers on Force Scream & Smash to maintain my viability in PVP.

1.2 Sorc Nerfs

Well there goes hybrid chain lightning spec and awesome force regen for healers. Do you guys feel that either of those were needed? The 31 in lightning is kind of garbage because of how slow it is. And as for healing, should we now waste talents in reducing how much consumption takes from our health?

After testing it on the PTS, the changes arent that bad for healing. Consumption did need a fix and i feel what they did is fine. You have to be more aware when you go to use it, but no other class can regen at anymore moment like that without using a CD.

The force bending change will bring balance and will take getting use to. But it isnt class breaking and we will still do fine in raids. IMHO

Originally we suspected it was simply because of the class we were playing until we learned that our male guildies–who play characters of the same class–have several flirt options all throughout the game. It is not specific to class, it is specific to female characters alone.

We feel this is quite sexist and are very dissapointed that the males of the same class toon have more flirt options.

We ask that you re-think future writings on how the genders are played, and please do not make the females so entirely boring and frigid. Let us have a little more personality.

Thank you.

MuNieK – PvP

To many abilities – piano playing must be reduced…

We want to play some pvp, not be musicians to piano play the keyboard… Consolidate the skills and let us focus on awaraness whats happenign around, teamwork and timing insetad of constant full time piano playing we are forced to do if we want to use all the abilities in pvp… Its just bad design Bioware… PvP should be about reflex and quick thinking, not player vs keybinds tetris or situation where you force people to be clickers due to not enough comfortable hotkeys…

For example jaggernaut immortal:

– taunt enemy attacking our ally
– shield ally being attacked
– intercede ally for more protection
– aoe taunt for reduced dmg to ally
– aoe slow to make pvp with enemy acceptable (slow on ability that is not in main-rotation is also huge mistake – in pvp slow is crucial and should be on all classes’ main abilities)

and thats just to start using actuall combat abilities… wihch also are scattered around to many skills not neccesarily…

Whats the point?

No more color restrictions on crystals ?! Really ?

Gauvi

I am playing a Star Wars game and one thing that was iconic to the franchise is definitely the color of crystals tied to the alignment of its user.

AJediKnight

Color has-never-been-nor-will-it-ever-be restricted to morality. Lucas himself has confirmed that there is no direct link. The only lore basis for the restrictions was that, in the time of TPM, AotC etc., Sith couldn’t get their hands on natural crystal supplies, and had to use synthetic crystals. Synth crystals (Luke used a synth crystal in RotJ, too, btw) are created by channeling the force through a forge. In the case of darksiders, this creates a crimson-red crystal… but not all synth crystals are red — nor are all the sabers of Sith red. Certainly, the fact that the Sith in the TOR timeline favor purple just as much as red is proof of this.

Frankly, the limits in TOR make absolutely no sense as implemented in the game. They neither preserve the ‘look’ of the films, nor do they have any basis in the lore. You would argue that color is tied to morality as if picking up a green or a blue saber as a darksider would cause it to explode in my hand. Even in the films, time and again we are shown that darksiders can use ‘light’ colors (Anakin/Vader with blue throughout Ep. III, Vader ignited Luke’s green saber in Ep. VI). Similarly, lightsiders can use red… as in the case of Anakin picking up Dooku’s saber to finish him off with.

Getting back on topic, the simple fact of the matter is, there is no canonical basis or otherwise for the current crystal restrictions. They were, quite literally, something Bioware conjured out of thin air. And, what’s worse, they don’t even preserve the look of the films, instead forcing many Jedi to abandon green/blue, and many Sith to forsake red. If you wanted to see more Sith using red, and more Jedi using green/blue as in the films, you should actually support dropping the restrictions.

As it stands now, I believe you simply don’t understand either the lore or the system we’ve got in game.

US transfers to Oceanic servers?

I’m a late night American player who specifically targeted Harbinger and Swiftsure for its Oceanic population at my playing hours. Now that those guys are moving I want the option of transferring with the people I play with or else get left behind or even worst, having to reroll, AGAIN.

What is Bioware’s stance on this issue?

Australian server transfer in LATE April!

Seriously,

We get a new server! We have lvl 50’s who raid and play endgame, but we have to wait almost 2 months before we can bring them across and actually play on the better latency?

Which person came up with this concept? You knew when the aussie servers were coming up and you did not allow for server transfers to happen immediately?

So now if we want to play on our mains (Which we DO) we have to go back to the 250 latency pings for another 2 months! Bravo!

And what happens when people take existing legacy surnames which we cannot reserve?

This is so pathetic!

Well only solution for me: End subscription till April and then try again! The only reason I renewed my subscription was because of wanting to play on low latency servers!

Will the new Australian servers kill the current unofficial Australian servers?

BW have announced they will be releasing Australian servers in Australia in early March, and giving the Australian’s transfers off the current unofficial Australian servers “The Swiftsure” and “The Harbringer” to those new servers.

My concern is that as an American playing on The Swiftsure that it will effectively kill my server by removing 70% of its population.

I rolled on this server as i work nightshifts it seemed like a logical choice, the unofficial Aussie servers usually are very well populated 24/7 unlike other servers. So it suited me perfectly.

After the Aussies all transfer off we will be left with a ghost-town server with no option to do anything other than re-roll on a populated server or unsub, and tbh the unsub option is more appealing than having to re-roll again and lose everything i have worked on for the past 2 months (3 level 50’s).

I suggest that EVERYONE on the current 2 Australian servers “the swiftsure” and “the harbringer” be given free transfers so we can all move to servers that suit us rather than punishing us by leaving us on deserted servers.

Hello everyone. I can absolutely understand the frustrations expressed here, and I appreciate that for the most part, you’re being constructive in your comments. Here’s a little more insight into the situation.

The character transfer system is being actively worked on by the development team. It’s a large, complex project, made more complicated by the Legacy System – and it has to work perfectly. As always, it is not the only task the team as a whole is undertaking, but it’s a priority. It has not been deliberately delayed, nor is it being ‘held back’ for any reason. As you know, the first stage of the system will be a one-off, optional transfer for those who are based in the regions defined in our FAQ. At some point after that, we’ll bring a more fully-featured character transfer system online for all to use.

I can understand the frustration of those of you who have been playing on the US servers and waiting for transfers. We know your enthusiasm and excitement for the game – you wouldn’t have taken the steps you did to get the game earlier than the official launch if you weren’t enthusiastic. We’re working as hard as we can to get the system in place. If we could have brought it online earlier, we would have. However, priorities post-launch had to be directed towards the game itself. The team’s been working flat-out to improve the game, including bug fixes and additional content.

Formal Apology to the Galactic Republic

It has come to our attention that in the years following the sacking of Coruscant that you have had struggles and economic disturbances which have put great strain on the once great Galactic Republic and as such a massive issue with population migration and overall strains on your operational capability are evident.

It is with our sincerest apologies that we must say the heroes and combatants of your glorious Republic just, simply, are not cool, in any way. They are, unfortunately, so not cool, that to be any less cool they would become cool for being so uncool. This is not something we have any direct control over, and if we did, Imperial Intelligence would already be hard at work behind the scenes on many Republic worlds, doing our best to make your heroes cooler, simply because fighting badly dressed, ill trained, cliche spouting stereo-types is a horrible waste of the time of our Empire’s best and brightest, who are, without a doubt, far cooler than any cream of the crop the Republic appears to be able to offer.

My server’s population went from heavy to light within one month

Over the last few weeks I have noticed that there are less and less people online during peak hours. Rwookrorro is an eastern server and we peak around 8 and 9 pm. Over the weekend I hadn’t noticed more then 45 people on the fleet. People from my guild have not signed as much too. People that were playing 3 or 4 times a week now play once or twice.

This was sorely disappointing, not in a QQ kinda way, but all I wanted to do was play the game and I couldn’t because my server is dying/dead. I sat there contemplating what to do next when I realized my pvp queue still hadnt popped! I disbanded the “group”, logged off and watched TV for the rest of the night.

Explosive_Lasers – SWTOR Story & Lore Subforum:

The Empire is a totalitarian government that endorses slavery, noble houses, and reveres the Force-users among them. They are generally very harsh, unforgiving, and ruthless. They are also fairly racist, and hold much more respect for Purebloods and Humans. While they aren’t all Dark or Evil, many may be considered as such, because the Sith tend to interpret their Code as endorsing anger and hatred, which lead to the Darkside. The citizens and soldiers that aren’t Force-sensitive are subservient to the Sith, so generally follow their lead.

The Republic is a democratic-republic, with elected representatives for each planet under its rule. Equality is endorsed, and slavery is mostly illegal. The Force-users among the Republic are trained to be disciplined and act more as guardians or servants, instead of rulers. Most of the races are treated equally, but humans are still slightly better off, in many cases. While they may seem Light or Good, corruption, greed, and other darker aspects live in the Republic. The Jedi are generally trained to be leaders, while serving the greater good of the galaxy, the Order, or the Republic.

So, neither side is Darkside or Lightside, just like Light and Dark are not always black and white in the sense of morality. The Empire and Republic have vastly different governments and regulations, just like the Jedi and Sith are far different than Light/Dark.
