It’s official: SWTOR launches in Australia/NZ on March 1st

In what is arguably one of the most tortured processes in MMO history, Oceanic players now have a date from which we’re officially part of the SWTOR playing community. That date is as expected: March 1st.

The date was set in an announcement today from Electronic Arts / BioWare, which is replicated in full below.  Aside from the date, the other big news in the announcement is something we confirmed with BioWare over the weekend: there will be local servers available, with free transfers to those servers for those currently playing the game.

As far as versions of the game, there’ll be no Collector’s edition available for pre-order – you’ll have the choice of the standard edition or the Digital Deluxe, which will be available locally via EA’s origin service. Other notables:

– pre-orders will get an in-game crystal as per US launch
– pre-orders will also get the Founder’s title as per US launch

Surprisingly, Electronics Arts Australia have decided not to hold a large launch event, instead opting for a ‘soft launch;

For those who’ve been following the game throughout its development, beta and US/EU launch, the local launch still has a lot of significance even though copies of SWTOR are already in stores and a lot of locals are playing. The local servers alone show a commitment to the region that many won’t have expected given some of the decisions made by EA prior to now.

Over to you: will you be pre-ordering anything or just looking forward to jumping on a local server? We’ll have more analysis through the day as well.

SWTOR early game access: 5 days

Bioware have just snuck out another announcement for those who have pre-ordered SWTOR, to confirm how early the promised early access to the game would be. The maximum head-start you’ll get will be five days, depending on how early you registered your pre-order code.

I have to say I’m disappointed, purely out of self-interest. I was relying on early game access to be the buffer that ensured my boxed copy arrived from the US prior to launch. It’s very unlikely to get here in five days though (particularly if the plane pictured is used).

It’s no-one’s fault as such – Australia isn’t part of the launch territories and for those people that are in the launch areas, five days is more than reasonable.

And I won’t get into the whole launch territories issue again I promise.

One important point to reinforce: it doesn’t matter if you purchased the Collector’s Edition or the normal box, you’re in the same queue for early access. I’ve confirmed this with Stephen Reid this morning via Twitter.

Over to you: are you now planning on December 15th as your launch date?

SWTOR box-shots and more ‘wait and see’

Lots of excitement overnight about some Spanish and Polish websites showing pre-order information and box shots of Star Wars: The Old Republic. One of the more fascinating ones (labeled as ‘work-in-progress art‘) is this shot of the Collector’s Edition pre-order:

For what it’s worth I love the look of the whole set and on first look it’s convinced me to fork out for the Collector’s Edition. Although it may only be a mock-up, for that it’s looking mighty nice. There’s also plenty of dicussion about some boxes already shipping and release dates coming up close. Here’s hoping, but I think both should be taken with an enormous grain of salt.

Bioware’s response to the pics has been a little more jovial than I expected. Senior Community Manager for SWTOR, Stephen Reid, posted this in response:

So it seems that San Diego Comic Con could be one interesting platform for announcements. We’ll be covering those in detail here and on this weekend’s Flash Point podcast.

Over to you: do you like what you see?

A big thanks to Darkflare on the forums for the initial heads-up: you can hear him as a guest on this week’s podcast as well.
