SWTOR 1.3 to drop this Tuesday

In case you hadn’t heard, BioWare have announced that this Tuesday’s maintenance downtime will be the point at which SWTOR 1.3 hits the game servers.

Even better, it’s a standard four-hour downtime, albeit with the chance of an extension if things don’t go totally smoothly.

The time conversions as always:

AEST: 5-9pm
AWST: 3-7pm
NZST: 7-11pm

The full details from BioWare:

Hello everyone, we wanted to let you know that we will be performing scheduled maintenance for four hours on Tuesday, June 26th, 2012 from 2AM CDT (12AM PDT/3AM EDT/8 AM BST/9AM CEST/5PM AEST) until 6AM CDT (4AM PDT/7AM EDT/12PM BST/1PM CEST/9PM AEST). All game servers and SWTOR.com will be offline during this period. This maintenance is expected to take no more than four hours, but could be extended.

Game Update 1.3: Allies introduces new features for all Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ players including a Group Finder tool, Legacy Perks, Ranked Warzones, and Adaptive Gear! Now you will be able to quickly find groups to take on Flashpoints, Operations, Warzones, and Planetary Heroic Missions. The Legacy System incorporates new bonuses including Advancement Perks which allows you to customize your leveling experience. With Adaptive Gear, social gear can now be used in combat, by fusing it with corresponding armor bonuses and creating slots for modifications. These are just a few of many exciting features of Allies! Learn more about Game Update 1.3 here

After this maintenance is over, restart the game launcher to patch to Game Update 1.3.

Suggestion Box: Funniest SWTOR Username

My wordy lordy it’s the end of another week, so it’s time to mount the soapbox and give your thoughts to the gathering throng. This week I thought it was time to discuss funny SWTOR usernames seen in-game. Now that a whole bunch of server mergers have been done and there’s on the whole larger populations online at the one time, we’re all seeing a lot of new ‘faces’.

So: what username (or even guild name) have you seen that’s given you a good laugh?

That laugh may be because the name is funny, or it may be a horrified laugh that someone could call themselves that. Post away in comments so we can all share in the mirth!

The Wrong Revolution?

MMORPG is a stale genre in many respects. Leveling, crafting, gathering. It’s all very familiar – electronic Dungeons & Dragons®. So when a new one appears we all hope that it’s got something new to offer, something improved, perhaps revolutionary. SWTOR promised this with the ‘fourth pillar’ of story and voice. It’s definitely made the leveling process more interesting and immersive so long as you don’t mind having your character and path heavily defined for you. But once you reach endgame this fourth pillar effectively vanishes, leaving you with the same ol’ tripod – a notoriously unstable configuration, particularly if the legs are different lengths.

Which is why two recent MMOs have got me thinking about whether BioWare really chose the right thing to pour so much time, energy and money into. I’m talking about Tera and Day Z.

Tera was launched in South Korea in January 2011 and in North America May this year. It runs on the time- tested Unreal 3 engine. Unlike SWTOR, the producers (Bluehole Studio) have made no attempt to reduce grind or draw you into a rich compelling story. What they have done is bring a third person shooter-style aiming system into an MMO, along with distinctive play styles and strategies for each class. I don’t need to tell you that this can remain fun and interesting long after the leveling process ends. Despite a total lack of innovation in most other areas, many admit it’s still damn fun and compelling. People want to try new classes because they each offer a something substantial and distinctive, not just different animations and light effects.

Day Z is completely different. A mod for ARMA II (plus its expansion Operation Arrowhead), Day Z runs on the propriatory Real Virtuality 3 engine and throws you into a zombie infested, post apocalyptic landscape (254 km.sq). You have some basic supplies, a weapon and zombies… so many zombies. Scattered about this enourmous landscape are fellow players who may help you, or just as likely kill you for the pittance in your backpack.

Every step you take, every choice you make has real consequences, it’s all about survival. But it’s not for everyone. There’s no crafting, no slick UI, no map (you WILL get lost… alot) or any of the plush velvet luxuries that many MMO players now demand. There’s no attempt at plot, but there are plenty of stories – all tales of player’s experiences – some are intense and no wonder. It’s just you, your wits and a little blind luck. This is a brutal, unforgiving place and it’s massively popular. So much so it’s pushed ARMA II sales up, even to the top of Steam’s sales chart. Not bad for a product still in alpha.

So where does that leave us? In fairness to BioWare, the world has changed a lot since SWTOR was conceived in early 2008. Back then K.Rudd had just apologised to the Stolen Generation and the Global Financial Crisis had yet to start biting. The world has changed a little since then, but not within SWTOR’s masterplan it seems, although that may change very soon. Only time will tell if the ‘fourth pillar’ was the right move or just a footnote in MMO evolution.

The real question is “where to from here?”. Maintain the ‘fourth pillar’ by continuing your personal story? Desperately add extra content for endgame? Re-examine the current market and make some hard choices? In all honesty, since it’s hard to tell what resourcing EA/Bioware have available for SWTOR, it’s hard to say – especially after the Austin studio lost somewhere around 120 fulltime staff (as best we can tell).

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not sick of the game, nor am I downhearted about its future, but I’m not going to gloss over existing problems. I believe that, with the world economy and reduced staff resources, BioWare need to decide who their core player base is and focus on improving the game for them. They will lose players but they’ll certainly gain many others.

In the meantime, we’ll just have to sit back and hope we see more openness and transparency in BioWare’s communication with their fans. They should remember that, like your character has a health bar, any business has a trust bar and that SOB drops fast and recharges very, very slowly.

Server transfers: updated list

We’ve not reported extensively on this the past week, mainly because the majority of Oceanic players had the first free transfers a couple of months back. That said, it’s worth posting the list of server transfers as they stand now, to give an idea of the scale of things.

Not surprisingly, two of the server casualties were The Jekk’Jekk Tarr and Swiftsure, which were two of the three unofficial Oceanic servers prior to us getting our own. The third unofficial server, The Harbinger, is one of the destination servers so will have no shortage of players for the first time in a while since the Oceanic exodus.

All Roads Lead to Rodia

Any of you familiar with the movies knows that the empire of Vader’s day isn’t the alien inclusive, warm and fuzzy Sith playground of SWTOR. Aliens are not tolerated in Palpatine’s version – it’s often referred to as a ‘humans only club’ and in some ways SWTOR is just as exclusive to humans.

Wait, did I just say that SWTOR is inclusive but it’s not? Contradictory much?

Let me explain. From the beginning, BioWare have had a pretty clear idea of what they would and would not do. Playable and romanceable races are one of those areas where they think they know best. Some they have relaxed (decisions having real consequences, others they have stuck to (player characters must be as human-like as possible).

While for some games a new playable race meets strong reactions for and against, you know you’re doing something reeeeally wrong when it’s met with a resounding “meh”. Cathars are humans with a re-skin – nothing newsworthy there. I mean, we all loved it when that Cathar character in The Empire Strikes Back grabbed the blaster and…. oh…. wait there weren’t any Cathars. This is a race that exists nowhere except in comic books and as a companion in the original KoTOR. Aside from the fact it’s an easy race to make playable since they’ll fit existing armor, there’s no good reason to add them. Lazy or panicked addition, I can’t really tell. Although their unremarked deletion from the video now playing on swtor.com could be a clue (see before and after), so let’s add ‘confused’ to the list. Now, if it had been Trandoshians, that would be news. Instead this seems more a case of activity trying to look like movement.

I’m not beating up Bioware for their assertion that for a character to be relatable it must closely resemble a human, particularly the face. After all, the less like us things look in the animal kingdom, the more likely it is to have its own classification of phobia. But it’s not a universal truth and it’s a lazy assumption. Personality can be injected into anything either by the creator or observer. For example, the first exercise a prospective animator will often be faced with is the flour sack. Think the flying carpet from Disney’s Aladdin. It’s not a nuanced performance, but you know what it’s thinking. Not convinced? I’ve one word for you. Well, four letters actually: R2D2. Perhaps BioWare have heard of him.

For a tripodic pepper pot, that droid has more personality in his little canister body than Mr Lucas managed to inject in most of the characters in the new trilogy combined. Now I’m not saying there’s much subtlety there either. R2’s vocal expressions are broad and much of what we pickup from him are the generous reactions provided by other cast members, but that’s the point. In an RPG you don’t need your alt to provide much, because you as a player do that. We are very good at anthropomorphising things. We do it all the time with our pets. Projecting real feelings is second nature – some of us even manage to do it with politicians. Most players don’t need the emotional telegraphing. If you are a hard core raider you won’t miss it and if you enjoy RP you don’t need it.

In writing and other creative fields there is the precept of ‘be prepared to murder your darlings’. No, it’s not recommending infanticide, but how you must be prepared to sacrifice cherished notions for the sake of the greater work’s quality. The idea of players not being able to relate to their Trandoshian bounty hunter or Rodian consular is flat out wrong.

If BioWare want to give people an added, meaningful reason to create alts and play other story lines, they need to wake up and smell the blue milk.

Server Downtime: June 19th 2012

Oceanic Guild Spotlight: The Exiled

If you’d like your guild spotlighted, just use our contact form to let us know. Or if you like, respond to the questions shown below and send them in – we love to profile guilds and the work they’re doing. The only requirement is that you’re an active oceanic guild. Please be patient if you don’t hear back from us immediately – we will only be spotlighting a guild every week or so.
Name of guild
The Exiled

Guild website
www.theexiled.org.au

History of your guild’s name?
A bunch of gamers from different backgrounds found themselves suddenly guildless and thus banded together to form The Exiled

What sort of guild are you?
Not hardcore, but not casual either. Somewhere in between. We have both operations and social members.

What are the achievements that your guild is most proud of?
I think the key achievement is the fact that we are being successful in end game content and keeping the guild a friendly welcoming environment.  Achieving progression without the BS 🙂

Why did you choose to be Sith?
Frankly I think it comes from a longing to slap Luke Skywalker 🙂 I mean, really, who doesn’t?  The majority of us rolled sith toons in beta and we have stayed sith ever since.  We do have a Republic arm of our guild as well for those interested, but the Sith group is the main operations group at this stage.

You have one minute to convince someone they should be in your guild – what would you say to them?
Our guild is founded by long time MMO players from a variety of games.  Many of us have dabbled in hard core raiding or heavily raid focused environments and have the seat sores to prove it!  We pride ourselves on creating an atmosphere that people want to be a part of, through enjoying our successes and celebrating our noob moments.  If you are looking for a group that offers consistent operations (in a low stress environment), playing with skilled people without the egos, seeing endgame content (in story or the more challenging modes) or just looking for a super friendly bunch of folk who can laugh at themselves (and each other) from time to time, then we may be the guild you are looking for.

Are you recruiting at the moment and if so what classes / type of players are you looking for?
Yes. We are looking to build a second 8 man team which will then lead to some guild 16 man events.  Currently in need of 2 committed tanks (preferably one of them a PT) and Healers (Merc would be nice for variety) and a couple of DPS.  We are closed for operative healers, Merc DPS and PT DPS.  As a guild we are also recruiting social members who are looking for somewhere to hang their hats and cool their heels.

What are your predictions for the next 6 months for the guild?
Looking forward to enjoying content releases and killing whatever BioWare release. 🙂 Looking forward to providing an environment of more laughs and consistent operations.  Looking to clear some nightmare content within the month.  The guild will also have a presence in other upcoming game releases so for those of you who have too much time on your hands and like variety, look us up.

Community Q&A June 15th 2012: Lotsa Bits

A belated posting of this week’s Community Q&A from BioWare.

It’s a decent sized one covering a range of things, although BioWare have given the heads-up that future instalments are likely to feature fewer answers on average.

Have a read for yourself:

GarrickBlackSun: I understand he is a long way off, but could you please possibly give us any sort of clearer or better insight to the unlocking of HK-51?

Daniel Erickson (Lead Game Designer): The only thing we’re saying today is its going to take a serious amount of work, involves a galaxy-wide mission, introduces some different ways of playing the game and most people will need to have a 50 of one faction and at least a mid-level character from the other faction. Get working on those Legacy characters!

Zoheb: It looks like the LFG Tool will limit the FP’s we can queue for to those within our level range. This may handicap those who have skipped a large number of FP’s and have effectively outlevelled that FP’s range. Will they be able to queue for FP’s below their level range and if not, why not?

Antonia Phillips (Development Director): Not at this time. The reason we did not include this option with the launch of the feature is essentially balance. We did not want to penalize some players by matching them with players far above their level. In addition, we want players to feel that they are contributing to content and not being carried through by higher level players. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying we won’t implement a version of this option with a future release. We’ve heard the feedback on the forums and we recognize that this is important, just as long as we implement it correctly.

SAtaarcoeny: Is there any chance of you guys making the PvP win/loss stats viewable by everyone?

Rob Hinkle (Senior PvP Designer): We currently do display a player’s rating via inspection and the /who list, as long as that rating is above a particular threshold (currently set to 1200). We really would like to encourage the competitive aspect of Ranked Warzones by allowing players to compare themselves against each other, so this is suggestion is definitely something we will talk about.

Cycao: Can I please get a response on this issue I have for Ranked Warzones and how you will deal with a disconnect? People disconnect from Warzones; it happens and sometimes it’s the game, others it’s a client issue, but it happens. To go down one man in a ranked warzone will be detrimental to the team.

Rob: We are aware that a Warzone team suddenly losing a player is a great disadvantage to that team, and we are investigating ways we can better mitigate that loss to the team.  One of the things that we currently have implemented is that the team that loses a team member will have that factor taken into consideration when the system makes adjustments to ELO ratings at the end of the match.

Skondy: Can one of the Developers give a detailed breakdown on how threat is generated? I have heard that it is generated more by how many times a player can land blows on the boss than by how much damage is dealt. So that a tank can hold aggro better by using his basic attack (rapid shots, saber strike, etc) in combination with his high threat moves, rather than trying to do as much damage as possible to a boss.

Austin Peckenpaugh (Senior Designer): Threat is equal to damage inflicted at a “one damage equals one threat” ratio. Passive threat modifiers then adjust that amount by a percentage, while active threat dumps adjust current threat levels by a percentage. I wouldn’t suggest using your basic attack to try and generate high threat.

Elfindreams: What does the “cover fire” keybind do? The keybind, not passive skill and not “take cover” or “take cover in place” – specifically “cover fire”. It does not have any function in advanced class cover mechanics that anyone has been able to detect.

Austin: This is actually a Dev function that was never cut from the retail build. You are correct that it serves no function to players. I’ll investigate why this option yet remains.

Theworldends: With the implementation of “smart” aoe attacks for tanks, why are there still no smart aoe heals that only target the lowest health group members?

Austin: So far, this hasn’t fallen into the category of gameplay we want to change. All AOEs prioritize targets closer to the center of that AOE, so a better aimed Revivification or Kolto Bomb will yield better results. It’s not hard to imagine a world with “smart” AOE heals though, so I’ll end with saying that it’s certainly something we’re still considering.

VexedLucifer: How do armor debuffs work? Do they allow for more damage from other players besides the one who put the debuff on the target? If two characters of the same class put an armor debuff on do they both allow for more damage or does only one take effect while calculating damage? For example, would a raid do more damage to a boss if it had 3 unique armor debuffs opposed to no armor debuffs?

Austin: Game Update 1.3 introduces a new system to regulate the stacking of buffs and debuffs, such that only the highest of any same-effect applies. There are some exceptions to this, but by and large (and in the case of armor reduction), only the highest of any same-effect will apply. You will still benefit from the presence of your own debuff (for example, your 5 stacks of Armor Reduction will enable your Guardian Slash to strike nearby enemies), but only the biggest debuff will affect the target’s stats. And yes, armor debuffs do benefit all attackers.

Jtsd: Will you release Power/Crit and Defence/Absorption enhancements? Currently the only way to get Crit Rating is to directly swap out Power, which is only slightly behind our Primary Stat in value. The only way to get Absorption is to take a larger amount of Accuracy or Shield Rating.

Jason Attard (Senior Game Designer): We currently have our late-game stats split into two groups: Power, Defense, Crit, and Absorb in one, and Accuracy, Alacrity, Surge, and Shield in the other. Modifications have a stat from the first group, and Enhancements have one stat from each group. This was done to prevent players from stacking a single stat to the exclusion of all others, and to help keep the number of Modifications and Enhancements in the game to a reasonable number. Every time we introduce a new set of gear we refine our item design, and we have considered loosening up the restraints on those stats in various ways, but we do not have an ETA for it yet.

Kingofthebritons: In last weeks’ announcement, we learned that the level cap will be increased later this year. With this change in mind, will any changes be made to the current PvE endgame? For example, will the difficulties for Hard Mode Flashpoints and Operations be increased to match the new level? If not, could you explain why?

Daniel: We’re keeping a tight wrap on details about the level increase later this year until we’ve done far more testing. Right now we have plans and theories but no empirical numbers for what, if any adjustments will need to be made to PvE endgame content.

SWTOR to go Free To Play?

Over the past 24 hours or so there’s been a lot of interest in some comments made by BioWare’s Emmanuel Lusinchi in an interview with UK magazine games™. Interestingly, the online interview preview appears to have been pulled, but you can still view the cached Google version.

The two comments being dissected so forensically are:

In regard to competition from free-to-play MMOs:

“I think it’s more than the free-to-play model – it’s more that there is a lot of competitive offers,” suggests Lusinchi. “If it was just free-to-play games and they weren’t very good it wouldn’t even be a question but there are definitely good games out there and good games coming out, so of course all of this competition impacts your plan with what you want to do.”

On feasibility of making SWTOR free-to-play:

“The MMO market is very dynamic and we need to be dynamic as well,” he says. “Unless people are happy with what they have, they are constantly demanding updates, new modes and situations. So we are looking at free-to-play but I can’t tell you in much detail. We have to be flexible and adapt to what is going on.”

That’s the sum-total of information out there at present. None of it is that explicit, nor that surprising. The challenge BioWare face is that in some quarters going free-to-play is seen as admitting defeat – even though some games have grown going that route. There’s no right or wrong – it’s just how such a model would work that becomes key.

Over to you: do you think F2P is on the near horizon, and if so, what impact do you think it will have on SWTOR?

Suggestion Box: Favourite Planet?

With the 1.3 update not far off, there’s a focus on new content in the game, but I thought this week we’d talk about the foundation of most gameplay in SWTOR: the planets. I’m still pretty enamoured with Voss and if I had to list a favourite, that’d be it. What I’m most interested in though is what planet you either love or hate the most. Does Taris make you want to use a cheese grater on your inner thigh? Does Corellia warm the cockles of your dystopian heart?

Oceanic Guild Spotlight: Aftermath

If you’d like your guild spotlighted, just use our contact form to let us know. Or if you like, respond to the questions shown below and send them in – we love to profile guilds and the work they’re doing. The only requirement is that you’re an active oceanic guild. Please be patient if you don’t hear back from us immediately – we will only be spotlighting a guild every week or so.

Name of guild

Aftermath (Mirror Guild: MDK) [Dalborra]

Guild website

http://aftermath-mdk.enjin.com/

History of your guild’s name?

There were a group of 8 of us who were pugging Ops together on Saturday afternoons. We’d laugh and joke and pull some more mobs and suddenly hours would have passed and almost everything on Ziost Shadow would be dead – including EC SM. When most of our respective guildies got lost in D3 we decided to form our own. Honestly, I wanted to call the guild Colin or Steven or something really banal just so we wouldn’t get stuck on the name. Aftermath was on a list of truly terrible names Takayo came up with – Cool Whip, Wheels of Steel, Walk the Earth (lolololol) – but when he got to Aftermath I said, ‘Yea, no one will be embarassed by that one”.

What sort of guild are you?

We’re a progression raiding guild in the sense that we love the strategy, challenge and teamwork required to raid at level, and we all chase that “woot” feeling you get from downing a boss that was a little bit hard, but we’re not hard-core. There’s no raid meters or guild hierarchies or anyone pushing you to gear up or be better. We’re more a collection of individuals that take personal pride in the way we play. We love SWTOR and get together a couple of times a week to accomplish something and have a laugh along the way. We have our share of PvPers, alt-o-holics, crafters etc but raiding is our core.

What are the achievements that your guild is most proud of?

I think that we’ve accidentally managed to assemble a group of really fantastic players that are lively, fun and so far from elitist it’s scary, yet we still manage to clear whatever raid we set our mind to within a lock-out.

I mean, Mayce yells “Allah Ayakabah” every time he wails on Kephess’ Strider because he believes you do more dps that way, the list of things Selk blames Jet for (right before a boss pull) now includes childhood obesity, Spencer Pratt, One Nation and the failure of the Treaty of Coruscant! And despite the jokes and frivolity the team cleared EC SM in half-Columi the first week they went in there. I think having fun makes you a better player.

Why did you choose to be Empire?

I’m sure if you asked everyone individually they’d give you a very intelligent and articulate rationale for why they chose to play Imperial, but secretly I suspect it’s the fashion. After all who’d choose tights over a long, black, dastardly cape and rocket shoes?

You have one minute to convince someone they should be in your guild – what would you say to them?

If you’re sick of sitting on the sidelines or your raid getting called due to no-shows and looking for a permanent place in regular as clockwork raids on a slightly zany, but highly skilled and very friendly raiding team, then please consider us. We’re a skilled, reliable, democratic, no-fuss team that really gets things done without taking ourselves too seriously.

Are you recruiting at the moment and if so what classes / type of players are you looking for?

Always! At the moment we’re looking for a few more people to complete our 16-man team so we can get everyone geared up through 8 man EC HMs, 16 mans and move onto Nightmare Pilgrim. I’d sell my mother for a couple more tanks but, honestly, anyone who loves raiding, progressing, achievements and loves getting together with a friendly, down-to-earth crew a couple of nights a week, but doesn’t take themselves too seriously while they do it, is going to love it in Aftermath.

What are your predictions for the next 6 months for the guild?

I imagine we’ll stay relatively small and keep doing what we’re doing. We don’t want to do the things large guilds have to do to keep everyone happy – rotate people out, continue farming old content indefinitely to gear up a never-ending stream of new recruits, constantly jostle and tweak the raids to suit too many varied tastes, styles and schedules.

I think for this reason, there’s a lot of recruitment competition and guild shuffling on Dalborra right now. Quite a few guilds are able to mount a half a team or a team and half – us included and are scooping up anyone with a view to sorting it out later. We’re going to stay focussed on keeping 4 tanks, 4 healers and 8 dps happy for now.
